Our law firm is devoted to planning for all aspects of an individual's financial endeavors. Whether our client consults with us to develop a new business entity, to identify suitable investments or to plan for their long-term care needs, we tailor a plan to help them achieve their goals with particular focus on their financial security. 

Co-Founder in 1988 of the Albany, NY based law firm Burke & Casserly, P.C., Timothy E. Casserly, Esq., CFP® focuses his practice in wills, trusts and estates; elder law; corporation and business succession planning; financial, retirement and tax planning; and utilizes his Certified Financial Plannerdesignation to provide wealth management and investment advisory services.

Tim is also a founding member and president of Arista Wealth Advisors, Ltd., a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) with the Securities and Exchange Commission which currently manages investments in excess of $150 million for various individuals, corporations, pension plans, and not-for-profit organizations on a fee-only basis.

Speaking Engagements, Achievements & Publications

Tim has lectured on Elder Law, Estate and Financial planning topics to many organizations and businesses across the country, including General Electric, the American (ABA) and New York State Bar Associations (NYSBA), the State University of New York, National Academy for Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), St. Peter’s Hospital, and the Financial Planning Association. Tim’s extensive knowledge and outstanding reputation in the field of estate and financial planning lead the College for Financial Planning in Denver, Colorado to make his lectures on Planning for the Elderly available on audio. The New York State Bar Association also sought Tim’s experience when they asked him to serve as an Associate Editor of the two-volume set Guardianship Practice in New York State.

Tim has authored numerous articles and course materials for legal and financial planning books and magazines and he has been quoted in such publications as the NY Times and Money Magazine.

In addition to his publications for professional audiences, Tim, along with his partner, Walter T. Burke, Esq., co-authored the consumer planning guide Boomer Basics: Everything You Need to Know About the Issues Facing You, Your Children, and Your Parents. Published by McGraw Hill, Boomer Basics is a layperson's comprehensive resource guide to personal, financial, and health issues as they relate to the Baby Boomer generation, their children, and their parents.

Tim’s combined practice of law and financial planning has earned Tim an invitation to participate in the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) Think Tank in Phoenix, Arizona, to address issues of planning and paying for long-term care. It’s a compliment to Tim’s aptitude for planning that he has been selected three times as one of eight mentors for the Financial Planning Association's National Residency Program, an intensive one-week training program for newly credentialed CFPTM designees.

Recently, Tim was honored for the second time by the New York State Bar Association at its Annual Meeting in New York City for his leadership as a member of the Bar's Power of Attorney Task Force. In 2008, following the issuance of several precedent setting Fair Hearing decisions he obtained for his clients, Tim was given an award for his "tireless advocacy and litigation, which has advanced the rights of the elderly and persons with disabilities."

Affiliations

Tim has devoted significant time to not-for-profit and professional associations such as the Financial Planning Association on both a national and local level. In addition to being a past president of the local chapter, Tim has twice chaired the Association’s Estate Planning Track of their three-day National Conference in San Diego and in New Orleans and is a Past Chair and member of the FPA’s Professional Issues Committee.

He is a past Chair of the New York State Bar Association’s Elder Law Section, Founding Chair of its Advanced Institute program and member of the NYSBA’s House of Delegates.

He is a member of the American Bar Association, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, and holds (or has held) governance positions with St. Catherine’s Center for Children Foundation Board, YMCA’s Camp Chingachgook, Government Law Center at Albany Law School, and the Albany Schenectady League of Arts.

Tim, a native of Long Island, New York, received his Juris Doctorate from Albany Law School of Union University in Albany, New York and his B.A. from Boston College. He is admitted to the State Bars of New York and Colorado. His commitment to his profession and community is comparable to Tim’s devotion to his clients.
