Co-Founder in 1988 of the Albany, NY based law firm Burke & Casserly, P.C., Walter T. Burke, Esq, concentrates his practice in elder law; trusts and estates; corporation and business succession planning; financial, retirement and tax planning; and along with partner, Tim Casserly, provides wealth management and investment advisory services.

Walter is also a founding member and vice president of Arista Wealth Advisors, Ltd., a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) with the Securities and Exchange Commission which currently manages investments in excess of $150 million for various individuals, corporations, pension plans, and not-for-profit organizations on a fee-only basis.

Speaking Engagements, Achievements & Publications

His peers acknowledged Walter’s experience in Elder Law and invited him to participate as an Official Observer at the White House Conference on Aging in Washington, D.C., in 1995 and again in 2005. Walter was also honored to serve as a Delegate at the New York State Conference on Aging.

Reflective of his expertise in developing business plans for physician groups, Walter was sought to co-author and review a practical handbook for physicians. The New York State Bar Association and the New York State Medical Society are jointly offering A Legal Manual for Physicians, which deals with the myriad legal issues physicians face. Walter also participated in a joint project with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and WGBH on a PBS documentary and Family Caregiver Handbook: “Caring for your Parents.”

In addition to his publications for professional audiences, Walter, along with his partner, Timothy E. Casserly, Esq., co-authored the consumer planning guide Boomer Basics: Everything You Need to Know About the Issues Facing You, Your Children, and Your Parents. Published by McGraw Hill, Boomer Basics is a layperson's comprehensive resource guide to personal, financial, and health issues as they relate to the Baby Boomer generation, their children, and their parents.

Walter’s extensive experience has led to local, regional, and national requests for lectures and seminars. He has appeared on various local public television and news programs including WRGB, WTEN, and WPAX explaining various retirement, elder law, estate and financial planning topics. He also has been a featured lecturer at New York University’s School of Law, Albany Law School, and numerous bar association seminars. Also nominated as a 2009 and 2010 Superlawyer.

Affiliations

Walter actively involved with several professional associations including the American Bar Association in which he served as Chair to the Senior Lawyers Division. Within this Division he is Chair of the Elder Law Committee, serves on the Executive Committee of the Division, and is liaison to the Business Law Committee.

He serves on the Elder Law Executive Committee and is a former Chair of the Elder Law Section of the New York State Bar Association, which has about 3,000 attorneys in New York State.

Originally from New York City, Walter received his Juris Doctorate from Fordham University School of Law. His easygoing manner, commitment to his clients, and depth of experience has resulted in a highly regarded planning practice.
