Planning Basics in Uncertain Times Webinar Series Part II – June 23, 2020
PART II
Part I of our Planning Basics in Uncertain Times webcast covers critical estate planning topics in the event of a crisis, including both lifetime planning using advance directives and succession planning issues involving how to make sure that your estate is settled following your wishes. In Part II, we turn our attention to long-term care planning topics, seeking to find a balance between addressing long-term care costs and asset protection goals. While Americans are living longer, the reality is that extra help with everyday activities may very well become necessary in the future. We will begin by covering the legal issues being raised in light of COVID-19 (including options for remote document execution). While following the recommended safety guidelines, you can still create, update, and/or finalize your estate and long-term care planning from home.
The discussion will next turn to planning for incapacity, whether it be injury, illness, or a cognitive impairment. How can you protect your assets, and what are the potential implications for doing so? Additionally, what options exist for asset protection in the time of a crisis, specifically if planning was never implemented in advance, or only partially implemented?
Finally, we will provide you with information on the various options for funding long-term care and available resources, including:
- Medicare;
- Private pay;
- Veteran’s benefits;
- Long-term care insurance;
- Medicaid; and
- Use of a Medicaid Trust in conjunction with planning.
Brookdale Niskayuna Assisted Living has organized this webinar series for the community, the professionals they work with and the families they serve. James Barnes is the speaker conducting the webinar series entitled “Planning Basics in Uncertain Times.” Each of these questions will be discussed in detail, allowing time for personal questions. In addition, we will also cover legislative updates impacting eligibility for Medicaid, as well as legal issues being raised in light of COVID-19 (including options for remote document execution). While following the recommended safety guidelines, you can still create, update, and/or finalize your estate planning from home.
